A batchmate lost his dad recently and I am confused whether i should check in or not

A batchmate from college lost his dad recently. We aren't close friends tbh he was my close friend's friend actually, we just wish each other happy birthday every year. I once asked him to forward my resume but I don't think he did, maybe it slipped his mind . He is a good guy btw nothing bad about him. He often puts up insta story about his pain . I don't really react kuch because it's feels very awkward to talk about something so personal . Should I send him any text asking if he is doing fine or should I simply ignore it.
