I received a $3,000 grant to start a web design business. Here’s the model I’m trying to build.
Hey everyone,
This summer I was accepted into Ontario's Summer Company Program and received $3,000 in funding to start and grow my web design business, InfaWeb.
The basic business is straightforward: I build new websites and redesign existing ones for small businesses.
But one of the biggest things I've learned so far is that building the website isn't necessarily the hardest part. Consistently finding good clients is.
So I've been experimenting with different acquisition channels including Reddit, local business communities, direct outreach, referrals, and now commission-based referral partnerships.
I'm currently offering referral partners 20–25% of the initial project amount collected when someone they directly refer becomes a paying client. I handle the consultation, closing, design, development, revisions and delivery.
My standard small-business projects generally fall around $700–$1,500 CAD, depending on the scope.
I'm also still taking on new website projects directly. If you run a business with an outdated website, need a redesign, or don't have a website yet, feel free to check out my work:

I'm interested in hearing from other business owners too: if you were building this from scratch, which acquisition channel would you focus on first?
And if you're involved in sales, business development, or already have a network of business owners and are interested in the referral arrangement, feel free to reach out.
