Zero-click searches are eating traditional SEO traffic, here's how brands are actually adapting in 2026

Discussion

Been noticing this more and more with clients lately, so figured I'd share some thoughts. Zero-click searches (where users get their answer directly on the SERP or in an AI Overview without ever clicking through to a website) have quietly become one of the biggest challenges in SEO right now.

A huge chunk of queries, especially informational ones, now get fully answered by Google's AI Overviews, featured snippets, or knowledge panels. So even if you're ranking #1, you might be getting way less traffic than you would've gotten two or three years ago for the same ranking.

Some things that seem to actually be working to adapt:

Shift the goal from clicks to visibility and citations
Instead of only optimizing for "will this get clicked," a lot of teams are optimizing for "will this get cited/mentioned" inside AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT. Being the source an AI quotes is becoming its own KPI, even without a click.

Double down on bottom-of-funnel and transactional content
Zero-click hits informational content the hardest (definitions, "how to" queries, quick facts). Transactional and comparison-driven content (pricing pages, "X vs Y," reviews) still tends to convert clicks because people want to actually interact with the product/service, not just read a summary.

Build content that AI literally can't fully summarize
Interactive tools, calculators, personalized recommendations, proprietary data/case studies, stuff that requires the user to actually visit and engage rather than just read a static answer.

Track different metrics
A lot of teams are now tracking brand mention frequency in AI answers, share of voice in AI Overviews, and impression data from Search Console more heavily than just raw click-through rate, since CTR alone doesn't tell the full story anymore.

Curious what others are seeing on their end, has zero-click search actually tanked your organic traffic numbers, or has it stayed relatively stable for certain content types?
