I think GTA VI’s biggest technological leap is something people aren’t talking about
Been going down a bit of a rabbit hole looking at some of Rockstar/Take-Two’s patents and the tech they’ve been working on, and it got me thinking about GTA VI.
This isn’t a leak or anything lol, just me connecting some dots and probably getting carried away.
Every time Rockstar drops one of their big games there’s normally something that makes you go “how the fuck have they done this?” GTA IV had the Euphoria physics which were insane at the time. GTA V somehow had that massive world running on a PS3/360. Then RDR2 came along and the level of detail was just stupid. NPC routines, animals, animations, random encounters, people remembering you etc.
So I started looking at some of the Take-Two patents and there’s stuff around NPC navigation, locomotion, runtime animations/retargeting and things like that.
And it made me wonder if GTA VI’s big leap isn’t actually the graphics at all.
What if it’s the world itself?
Like imagine you cause a massive crash on a busy road. In GTA V everyone just loses their shit, traffic gets stuck and eventually everything despawns.
But imagine in VI, cars actually start trying to get around it. People get out to see what happened. Someone starts recording on their phone. Another NPC calls the police. An ambulance eventually turns up. Police start moving people away and controlling traffic while paramedics deal with whoever got hurt.
And none of it is a scripted random event. You literally caused it yourself and all these different systems just reacted to each other.
Same with police. Instead of cops basically having a GPS tracker implanted in your ass the second you get a wanted level, maybe witnesses actually matter. They know where you were last seen, what car you were in, what you looked like etc. You ditch the car somewhere and now they’re actually searching for you rather than magically spawning around the next corner.
Crowds could be another one. Start a fight somewhere packed and instead of 30 NPCs all doing the same panic animation, some run, some watch, some record, security tries getting through, someone joins in, someone calls the cops.
That’s the sort of shit I think could make VI feel genuinely next gen.
Because Rockstar already did the “massive open world” thing with GTA V. Then they did the ridiculously detailed living world thing with RDR2.
GTA VI could basically be those two ideas smashed together.
Obviously I’m completely speculating here, but considering what they managed to squeeze out of a PS4 with RDR2, I genuinely think the biggest GTA VI upgrade might be something screenshots and trailers can’t even properly show.
It’ll be when you’re 30 hours into the game, some completely random shit happens in front of you and you’re sitting there thinking:
“Wait… was that actually scripted?”
That’s the Rockstar leap I’m expecting.
