Do veneers or a smile makeover change your confidence, or is that overstated online?

Chipped front teeth, self conscious about it for years, considering veneers to finally deal with it. Every testimonial out there makes it sound like some kind of turning point. I'm skeptical of that framing. Has it actually changed anything for anyone here or did it mostly just cost money and leave you feeling the same?
