How Can I Go About This Legally? Any Input is Appreciated
November 2025: I found out I was pregnant. My ex-boyfriend asked me to move into the home that was owned by his friend (LL). The landlord knew about my pregnancy from the very beginning.
January 2026: The landlord unexpectedly raised our rent by $200 because I was staying there. Even though it caught us off guard right when we were preparing for a baby, we paid it anyways.
Late January 2026: A white female tenant moved in and immediately caused chaos. She had the hots for my boyfriend, lied to the landlords to get me kicked out, and called me racial slurs.
The 3-Day Notice: Management completely ignored her behavior and took her side. They suddenly gave me 3 days to leave the house. I was 3 months pregnant, had no family nearby, and had nowhere to go, so I pleaded for time. They finally agreed to give me 30 days.
February 2026: I spoke to the property manager, who openly admitted they knew the roommate was crazy and lying. They told me I could stay as long as I got a job, contributed to rent, and signed a month-to-month lease—even though my ex was already paying rent on his own
Late February 2026: Just 5 days before my 30-day deadline, the landlords changed their terms and demanded I have a job before the deadline. This made no sense since I didn't know if I'd have to relocate to Phoenix or stay in PV
Early March: By God's grace, I secured a job. On my very first day, my new manager told me my landlord had texted them to pry into my hours and whether I was part-time or full-time. I knew then they were deliberately messing with me because Im black. I've been cordial with these people despite what they're doing to me. It felt like I was getting attacked.
Overt Racism: My ex-boyfriend revealed to me that the landlord explicitly told him he was "disappointed in his choices of women" because he liked Black girls. Whenever the landlord came to the house, he refused to speak to or even acknowledge me. Despite this, I thoroughly read the lease and signed it.
Spring & Summer 2026: I worked late-night shifts until 2:00 AM or 3:00 AM and was exhausted from being pregnant. One day, the landlords came over, and I stayed in my room to rest and stay out of their way. The landlord texted my ex, threatening to make arrangements for me to leave immediately just because I was in the room trying to get rest for my next overnight shift.
A window broke in our room. Even though I was 7 months pregnant in the middle of summer, the landlord refused to fix it and told my ex to "go cry about it."Thermostat Restrictions: Because it was an older home, we were forbidden from turning the thermostat below 74°F unless we wanted to pay extra charges.
June 2026: At 8 months pregnant, I was told I had to move out because of a "no minor policy." They claimed it was in the lease and that we discussed it, which was a lie—I never would have signed it if that were true.
Retaliation: When I asked for a copy of the lease and told them what they were doing was illegal, management tried to avoid giving it to me. When I refused to back down, they threatened me with an eviction notice, giving me a hard deadline to be out by July 24th, 2026.
July 2026: Medical Emergencies & Early Labor
July 11, 2026: I went to my OB appointment, and an ultrasound showed my baby weighed only 5 lbs, 9 oz. The doctors told me the baby's restricted growth was due to the constant, extreme stress I was under.July 15, 2026: The emotional and physical toll landed me in the emergency room three separate times in just a few weeks. Realizing the stress was literally killing me, I abruptly packed up and left the house for good.Late July 2026: A few days after escaping, I had to go back to the ER due to severe swelling and dangerously high blood pressure. Because of the medical risk, my doctors decided to induce my labor early to keep my baby and me safe.
