Thoughts on Viareggio as a base for a month long visit in October?

We (late 40s couple)are in the planning stages of a fall trip to revisit a number of our favorite places in Tuscany. We will be bringing our own vehicle (from Sweden) and daytripping for the most part. Hiking wineries and good food. Morning runs along the waterfront.

We found a really nice apartment in Viareggio at a great price. It's near Pisa and Lucca with direct trains to Florence which is great but after looking at YouTube videos which portray it as a generic beach holiday location we're not sure.

Even if it's not a classic Italian seaside town it could be suitable as long as it's not Italy's version of Benidorm.

Anyone been there and what are your thoughts as a base for daytripping?
