I refer to this article by CNA, which in my opinion is very poorly written.
The entire article focuses on speeding and how speeding is directly correlated to RTAs and road fatalities.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m all for road safety.

However, I feel that the focus that our law has on speeding is greatly exaggerated. Take this statistic and I quote “But in 2025**,** speed-related accident numbers dipped to 515, even as traffic accident numbers rose overall. The number of speeding-related fatal accidents also fell 10.9 per cent from 46 cases in 2024 to 41 cases in 2025.” So why are we targeting speeding as the primary issue then? Perhaps cos it is the single most simple metric for the TP to look at. Not to mention the unreasonable 50km/h speed limits on certain off ramps from the expressways which is not only ridiculous but a safety hazard. And then there’s the 70km/h camera (from 80/h) at KPE which is situated just after the speed warning sign. If that’s not entrapment then I don’t know what is. A sudden significant reduction in speed by groups of cars are exactly what causes RTAs by the way.

Here are some “traffic violations” and observations that I notice as a driver on our roads. I feel that these “violations” are greatly under punished. Correct me if I am wrong for these.

1. Not turning on headlights at night- Fine $30
2. Not signaling to change lanes- No punishment
3. Lane splitting- No punishment.
4. Failure to give way to an emergency vehicle - 4 demerit points
5. Careless driving and endangering life- 6 demerit points

For comparison, here are the demerit points for speeding:
≤20 km/h over → **6 points + $200**
20–30 km/h over → **8 points + $300**
30–40 km/h over → **12 points + $400**
40–50 km/h → **18 points + prosecution**
50–60 km/h → **24 points + prosecution**

Can someone explain to me how a <20km/h speeding incident is as severe as careless driving and endangering life?

Besides that, I believe that more education and public awareness on RESPONSIBLE driving is needed.

This means:
\- Giving way when someone signals
\- Moving towards to middle lane or the left lane if not going or beyond the speed limit
\- not tailgating/driving unreasonably slow
\- zipper merging PROPERLY

And the list goes on.

I believe that more emphasis is needed on how our driving behavior is on the roads. Not just about whether our speed limits “align with international standards”.
