I miss the middle game
I started playing Magic around 2009, and what I miss most isn't necessarily the old cards. It's the way a 60-card, 4-of deck used to play.
You'd spend the first few turns setting up, then you actually played Magic for several turns: creatures on the board, attacks, blocks, removal, bad trades, risky plays, slowly gaining an advantage. Then, eventually, someone closed the game.
A lot of games today feel more like:
Ramp → engine → interaction → win.
Sometimes the game is basically decided by turn 4-5. The battlefield stays empty because playing a creature into efficient removal can feel like volunteering to lose value. And when the removal spell also draws a card, creates a token, drains life, etc., it doesn't even feel like a trade anymore. Commander is even getting to this point though at a more slowly rate.
I don't mind powerful cards or interaction. I just miss the middle.
The part where both players actually get to put cards on the battlefield and make mistakes, adapt and fight over something.
I don't want weaker Magic, i just I want more Magic between setup and the finish.
