Question about labor laws

Q&A

Hello! I have been working a job for a few months in Utah (I am NOT a minor, so the laws might apply differently for me) but my job in healthcare requires us to clock out for a break that is 30 minutes, or 22 minutes at the absolute shortest. This is an unpaid break, where I am clocked out for lunch. That being said, we are required to work during it. Since I work in a hospital, we basically always need people staffed and working (I have 2 colleagues working at any time, we all have roles that are constantly necessary). We CANNOT genuinely take a break and we HAVE to keep working as is emphasized by leadership and my boss. They say it's fine because we get downtime throughout the shift (it is seldom 22-30 minutes of downtime consecutively though).

I understand how necessary the role is, and that we can't leave this station in order to help patients, but is this illegal? I feel like we shouldn't have to make up for the company not staffing one additional person to fill in for people on breaks. I feel so screwed over not getting paid for these breaks, especially since we are "required" to keep working during them.

An unpaid break is one thing- but an unpaid break where I HAVE to work?? Surely this can't be legal- even in Utah right?

I don't know anything about labor laws, and if any of you have insight into this, I'd love to know more.
