**Reuters reports that former US Marine Robert Gilman, 32**, was released from Russian custody on August 11 after spending 1,666 days detained. Russian President Vladimir Putin granted a humanitarian pardon following discussions with President Donald Trump, and US officials said Washington made no prisoner swap or other concession in return.

**The Associated Press adds that Gilman had been** imprisoned since 2022 after Russian authorities accused him of assaulting a police officer and, later, prison personnel. Gilman's family disputed the accusations, while the State Department ultimately designated him as wrongfully detained. The conflicting accounts remain important because the original charges and Gilman's treatment in custody are still contested.

**The Washington Post notes** **that Gilman's deteriorating** health had become an increasingly urgent factor in negotiations. His family and advocates feared he could die in custody, while Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev publicly characterized the release as being made for humanitarian reasons. Gilman is expected to receive further medical treatment in the United States.

**Russia has historically used detained** Americans as components of negotiated exchanges. Gilman's release without an announced reciprocal concession therefore stands out and could represent a deliberate goodwill signal toward Washington at a time when the two governments remain deeply divided over Ukraine and other security issues.

**A humanitarian release without a prisoner trade could create a limited channel for cooperation even while broader US-Russia relations remain adversarial. It may also give Moscow diplomatic leverage by demonstrating that individual concessions are possible through direct presidential engagement, while Washington will face pressure to translate this opening into progress for other Americans still imprisoned in Russia.**
