do you love your job? if yes, why?
incoming college freshman at a ~target us college (target for high finance, slightly lower for quant). no major yet, but i intend on majoring in statistics and maybe a second major/minor in philosophy, econ, or cs (interested in philo/english/history/econ).
currently my decision tree for career looks something like:
realistically i dont even need to add econ or cs
do you enjoy the work itself? Like if the pay were cut in half, would you still want to show up? Trying to figure out if this is something people genuinely like or just tolerate for the comp.
What's good about it besides money, hours, the actual problems you work on, the people, whatever, im just curious what the non-obvious perks are?
would someone like me be a decent fit?
- im on a solid stem path already, decent at pattern recognition and systems-type thinking, 3 swe adjacent internships for background, comfortable with deep focus. school should should give me the math signal. hours sound much better than what i've heard for ib
- im not sure i'm "smart enough" in the raw math-competition sense, i'm good but I don't know if im freakishly good. did a few math comps (regional uni invitationals, won $750 scholarship as top 5 for team) and physics comps (regional top x) in hs, was much more talented in middle/elementary school before i quit. i also like having some creative room and i care about work that feels more meaningful. quant seems like it could feel a little removed from the real world.
so far vc, pe, and startups are the most intriguing for me.
please give me any advice. anything you read or listened to, how you figured out your passion for this job, etc.
