Protection spell

i m new to this spell and witchcraft thingy. I want to do a spell on my ex with whom I broke up 2 weeks ago, to get him back. I have heard so much about spell backfiring. Is it true? If yes, do I cast a protection spell and how? Do I cast it before or after the spell for my ex?
