John Sharp spent April 11 with his 17-year-old friend Dana Wingate. The teenagers were seen in Quincy and later returned to Keddie, reportedly arriving sometime between 10:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. By the next morning, John, Dana, and John’s mother Sue had been murdered inside Cabin 28. John’s sister Tina was missing; her remains were recovered three years later.
John and Dana’s final movements remain important. What did they do in Quincy, whom did they meet, and what did they observe after returning home? Investigators have reportedly identified and interviewed the person who drove them back, but the exact arrival time and conditions inside the cabin remain publicly unclear.
Research update: A suspected murder weapon was recovered from a pond in 2016. In 2018, investigators reported that DNA from medical tape at the crime scene matched a known living suspect. Nevertheless, no charges have been filed, and the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office still considered the Keddie murders open in 2025.
