What’s your experience moving from a big city to more rural areas?

Hi all,

We are pondering about moving from NYC metro area to Lebanon, NH and surrounding parts to be close to family and own a proper piece of land. One of us is working on a startup and the other holds a remote job. For those of you who have made similar moves from a big city to more rural areas, can you share your experience/pros and cons/ compromises you have to make?

We value nature, outdoors, land ownership in addition to proximity to the family support system. I’m in marketing and blessed with a good job. But in the age of AI job security is never a guarantee. If I’m looking at the cons of the move, the biggest would probably be alternative career options in case current job disappears. Local jobs in the same field often don’t pay as much. Remote positions are more of a luxury these days. It would be a pretty bad scenario if we move there only to hop back into a big metro for jobs a couple years later.
