Dehumanisation...questions to the void.
Dehumanisation isn't merely in the act of violence. It is in the moral perception that makes the violence intelligible or permissible.
I have never heard a Palestinian old enough to comprehend say to me that the 1940's Holocaust doesn't matter. I have heard them say many times, "the Holocaust matters so much that its moral lessons must apply to us too."
Questions I am asking:
Who created contains and manipulates the closed moral system the Israel state and its soldiers are using to justify genocide?
What does it say about a political ideology when the death of a Palestinian child can be absorbed into the category of "security," while the death of an Israeli child is expressed an intolerable assault on humanity itself?
How does a population that has been dispossessed, occupied, fragmented and denied self-determination become represented as the primary existential threat to the population exercising power over it and what forms of militarised socialisation, political ideology and dehumanisation etc make that reversal possible?
What psychological transformation and mechanism allows the same human being to perceive himself as vulnerable and fully human in one context, while perceiving another person as an object in another?
What happens psychologically to a Palestinian person or child, when the world repeatedly tells them that their ongoing suffering is the unfortunate consequence of someone else's survival?
What does it mean to live as a Palestinian in a political reality in which another population's security, sovereignty and historical trauma have repeatedly been given priority over your basic rights and freedom, your families security, your lands and self-determination, your life?
What kind of collective responsibility can we assign to a population committing Genocide, without converting political responsibility into a justification for denying all individuals within that society their humanity and repeating the same cycle?"
Why is Palestinian resistance to the political conditions imposed upon them treated as the primary explanation for those conditions?
If an Israeli child can be understood as a child.
A Palestinian child should be understood as a child too.
Yet a Palestinian child becomes:
- a security concern;
- a potential future combatant;
- a demographic problem;
- part of an enemy population;
- an unfortunate casualty;
- a statistic.
- media content
The individual child disappears behind the category.
This categorisation, is the essence of the dehumanisation problem as I see it - it is the psychological political and moral key that unlocks the potential for the commission of Holocaust itself.
In order to commit genocide, YOU must be dehumanised too long before you act to dehumanise your target population.
How did the memory of Jewish persecution become transformed from a universal warning against dehumanisation, into a political doctrine of exceptionalism and nationalism now committing industrial scale dehumanisation?
