AITA for not letting my in-laws into my apartment unannounced?
My husband and I just bought a new apartment this month. My in-laws have helped us throughout the process, from apartment hunting to moving day. On one hand, I’m grateful, but on the other hand, I’d like to be independent.
It’s an empty apartment, so far, we’ve only gathered a few basic pieces of furniture, just enough to start living there. We still don’t have a loooooot of things yet, especially shelves and drawers, so bags and boxes are still everywhere. It’s my first time owning a place, so I want to take my time to design it perfectly. But what’s been stressing me out is that my in-laws have been checking in regularly to see our progress. They don’t understand why our place is still a mess.
Meanwhile, my side of the family still doesn’t even know where we live yet (I’ve only told the location). So, we’re planning to have a small, intimate housewarming with both sides of the family this weekend to properly update everyone.
My in-laws offered to help us fix the tiles and set things up for the party, which was nice. But we told them to wait because we wanted to clean up our mess first. We said we’d let them know when we were ready. But then they just came over anyway with a table and chairs for the party.
I told my husband to just take the table and chairs, but please don’t let them come inside (I don’t want to be judged). He did, and they are mad at me. They still managed to come inside and take a look at the apartment, too.
