AIO for being upset that my BF doesn’t want to be my plus-one bc he doesn’t want questions from his former coworkers?

❤️‍🩹 relationship

My boyfriend quit his job back in February 2024 because he told everyone he was moving out of state. He ended up getting a really good corporate job, so we decided to stay. He got the interview partly because his former boss spoke highly of him to the interviewer. (Former boss and interviewer are friends due to church)

Now there’s an event at his former workplace that I invited him to. He doesn’t want to go because he’s worried his former coworkers will ask why he didn’t move. It’s not that he’s anxious about seeing them or that they treated him badly, he just doesn’t want to answer questions or deal with what they might think.

I understand not wanting an awkward conversation, but I’m hurt that he’s willing to skip an event with me over something that might not happen.

What makes it worse is that I regularly attend multiple family events for him, even though one of his family members distinctly ignores me and doesn’t acknowledge me. I still go because I want to support him, even though I sometimes feel unwelcome. He understands if I don’t want to attend in the future, but I can’t help feeling like I’ve repeatedly put myself in uncomfortable situations for him, while he won’t do it for me one time.

I don’t expect him to tolerate disrespect. I just wish he’d be willing to tolerate a little awkwardness to support me.

It makes me wonder if he cares more about his dignity and how other people perceive him than how his choices make me feel.

Maybe I’m making this bigger than it is, but it’s making me question whether this is part of a bigger issue in our relationship.

AIO? If I am, I really want to apologize to him for overreacting. Please nice comments only.
