Does your partner know about your fics? How did it come up?

Discussion

For those of you in relationships - first of all, happy for you - but to what extent does your partner know about your fic writing and/or reading? How did you bring it up to them? Or are they in the hobby and brought it up to you? How did it go? Just curious to hear everyone's experiences.

For context, I (27M, if that matters) was talking with my therapist recently that I feel like I'm boring, but I'm afraid to tell most people about my fanfic hobby. My therapist asked me some more questions about it and said that my eyes lit up and I became this dynamic person when i talked about it, and asked why I conceal this part of myself that shows passion and creativity.

All writing is vulnerable, fanfic is somewhat misunderstood among the uninitiated (luckily my therapist is versed in fandom, though not a fic guy per se), and in my case, I feel like it's slightly more associated as a hobby among women rather than straight men. If I just say I'm into writing, I fear people either thinking I'm a pretentious asshole when I really write self-insert fanfiction - yes, I know, I'm a grown-ass man, it's fun and a coping mechanism - OR asking to read it.

At the same time, it would be pretty awesome if I could feel safe enough in a relationship to share that with my partner - not that she would need to indulge me and read it, but just, to be seen, you know? Only a select handful of very close irl friends know about my fics. I was in a relationship for a few years when I was younger and was always terrified of my girlfriend finding out about my fics.

Was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing and had navigated it. Bonus points if it factored into your selection process for your partner at all. I feel like putting something about fanfics on a dating app profile would be coming on strong, but then, if I saw a woman mention it on hers I'd like it instantly lmao. Couple beta/cheer reader would be couple goals.
