Return policy on meats?

I bought fresh boneless skinless chicken thighs at aldi's on Sunday and I went to make them for dinner last night (Tuesday) and when I opened them package there was a foul smell to them but they looked absolutely fine? I would have taken them last night but it was late. I debated putting them in my fridge and taking them back today, but didn't really want to put them back in my fridge with my other food? What is the return policy on the fresh meat? I ended up throwing them out just because of safety but that was very expensive. Everything else in my fridge is ok so it has to be something with the packaging.
