I started realizing my dad was really getting older

Last week on a Wednesday, my phone suddenly rang. It was my neighbor calling. He told me that my dad had just fainted and was now hospitalized. Without thinking twice, I took leave and rushed back to the hospital.

After the checkup, the doctor asked whether we had noticed anything changing earlier. That question stayed with me. It made me realize that my dad is getting older, and that we need to pay more attention as the years go by.

Since then, I have gradually started paying attention to insurance and health monitoring. I used to treat both as things I could sort out later. With insurance, I started by looking at what was actually covered, whether the nearby doctors and hospital were in network, how the deductible would work, and whether we could realistically keep up with the premium. It is less exciting than reading about new apps, but it feels like the part that needs patience.

For health monitoring, I am comparing tools that solve different problems. Health in ChatGPT is on my list for my own records and the questions I want to bring to appointments. For my dad, I am also looking at Theta Wellness and its Care Circle feature, which is designed around helping families keep track of a loved one's health information and key changes. I do not need a dashboard to give me an answer. I need a better way to keep the thread when there is a lot to remember.

I keep wondering how old other people were when they started sorting this stuff out. I am still comparing options and have not made a final call on either the insurance or the tools. But after this, I listen more closely when family says they are fine. I am also more humbled by how quickly ordinary life can change. Maybe that is part of growing up.
