partner met my family and it was a mess but i still feel like i overreacted
so my partner finally met everyone over dinner and the whole thing went sideways right away. they got the names mixed up twice, told the same joke that nobody really laughed at, and then tried to help clear the table but knocked over a glass of water. everyone was polite but the vibe got stiff and quiet after that. once we left i kind of snapped and said it felt embarrassing, which made my partner shut down for the rest of the night. now i'm wondering if i was too harsh since it was literally the first time they were around everyone and nerves were probably high. part of me wants reassurance that first impressions are not always perfect, but another part thinks i should have just laughed it off and talked about it later. am i wrong for feeling this embarrassed or should i have given them more grace?
