ghostWriter Markdown - my accessible iOS markdown editor
After a post about accessible Markdown editors came up over on r/blind, I decided to port my ghostWriter web app to iOS. As a blind developer, I built this from the ground up as a VoiceOver-first app, then built in Dymamic Type support and readability options. I use Markdown all the time for writing structured notes, and wanted something to use other than Notes which only writes in Apple's RTF format.
The app is lightweight, solely devoted to writing, editing, and rendering Markdown into HTML. It syncs with iCloud, so you create files on the fly and work on them between your Mac, iPad, and other devices. The rendered web view allows us VoiceOver users to navigate our documents like a web page rather than having to jump line by line through long-form information.
Some nifty features I'm proud of:
- The Outline feature lists out all the headings you have written in your document, and tapping any of them brings VoiceOver and keyboard focus to the beginning of that heading line in your document.
- If you forget the syntax, an Insert feature will let you choose exactly what element you need, plus there's a handy Markdown reference in the File Actions.
- Render Markdown into HTML directly, and share your files out as Markdown, plain text, or HTML directly; this will even share HTML out as an HTML email.
- Create and nest folders in the Library view to organize your documents, while also being able to sort and search.
- The satus bar will show you word count, character count, line count and position, and more.
- Keyboard cursor placement is remembered when backing out of a file, so you'll never lose your place when reading or editing.
- File collision is handled when having the same document open at the same time between devices. You'll be prompted in ghostWriter Markdown to save out a new file or accept the incoming changes.
It's all free and just went live on the App Store, so check it out if interested! ghostWriter Markdown on the App Store
