How to deal with this grief?
I want to ask the dads here: has anyone experienced the loss of a child who never had the chance to come into this world? A child who was still in the womb and was aborted?
My (33M) wife (29F) decided to have an abortion shortly after we found out about the pregnancy. We found out together when the strip test came back positive. I wasn't consulted or given a say in the decision. I was informed, of course, and I was there with her throughout the process, taking care of our daughter while she underwent the procedure.
I support my wife's decision, and I understand the reasons behind it. But I still wish I had been consulted. More importantly, I never realised how deeply it would affect me.
This happened last August. Now August has come around again, and the grief hasn't gone away. I find myself crying over the possibility of what could have been.
I have a beautiful daughter who is turning two, and I love her more than I can put into words. One of the reasons my wife didn't want another child was because she felt we weren't ready for another one. I understand that. But sometimes, whenever I look at my daughter, I find myself thinking about the child I could have been loving, raising, and watching grow alongside her.
There is this void inside me that I can't seem to explain or fill. I don't regret supporting my wife, and I'm not writing this to blame her or question her decision. I think I'm simply grieving a child I never got the chance to know.
This is the first time I've actually tried to put these feelings into words instead of keeping them in my head.
I don't even know exactly what I'm looking for by posting this. Maybe I just want to know whether other fathers have felt something similar, and whether this grief ever becomes easier to carry.
