He(22m) said he wasn’t ready for a relationship, told me he still loved me(20f) months later, and now he has a girlfriend?

venting/ranting

I was involved with a guy starting at the very end of September last year who made it very clear he had strong feelings for me. We were never officially boyfriend/girlfriend, but he pursued me romantically and I developed really strong feelings for him too.
Things ended around November because he repeatedly told me his life was too overwhelming for a relationship between working graveyard shifts, being a full-time student, etc. He never told me he lost feelings or simply didn’t want me. He made it sound like his circumstances were the problem and even talked about reaching back out when his life became easier.

We stayed intermittently in contact afterward. Sometimes we’d go weeks without talking, but he’d still flirt with me, tell me he missed me/wanted me/wanted to see me, etc. Other times he’d suddenly become extremely cold and distant.

The biggest thing happened in March. We hadn’t seen each other in months and ended up drunk at the same party. I was basically passed out away from everyone trying to sober up when he came over to me. He started kissing my cheeks/forehead, then started making out with me and completely unprompted told me he loved me. I initiated none of this.

A few days later, sober, I asked him what the hell that meant. He told me he had “never stopped liking” me and being drunk made him act on his feelings, but AGAIN said he didn’t want a relationship because of his schedule. When I kept asking whether he actually meant the “I love you,” he eventually shut down and basically said, “No I didn’t, and i’m done talking to you about this.”

Obviously that night gave me tiny bit hope. If he had just said, “I don’t have feelings for you anymore,” I would’ve been hurt, but at least I would’ve known. Instead, months after we ended, he was still actively showing/telling me he had feelings while saying timing was the reason we couldn’t be together.
Eventually the hot-and-cold behavior hurt too much and I repeatedly asked him to block me so I could move on. He refused for a while and even admitted at one point that part of him didn’t want me to get over him. Eventually I got him to block me.

About a month later, I accidentally discovered he’d unblocked me (the last time we had spoken was maybe a month ago). I called for literally a second because I assumed I was still blocked, immediately hung up when it rang, and he texted me “?” within two minutes.
Now I’ve found out he’s in his first actual relationship (at least I think, he kept saying i’m seeing someone when I asked if he was in a relationship/ has a girlfriend) in roughly four years and has apparently been seeing her for about a month.

I contacted him shortly after I found out he unblocked (I know) and we ended up texting from around midnight until 4 a.m. He now says his schedule genuinely was too much when we were involved, but he works much less now and is almost done with school, “so it just worked out better when I started seeing the person I’m with now.”
He also says his feelings for me eventually faded. I asked what I did and he said “it wasn’t anything you did.” I asked why they changed and he said he genuinely doesn’t know, it happened gradually, and “it’s not like I wanted to lose feelings, it just happened.”

I also asked why he unblocked me. He said he has no grudge against me and assumed I’d eventually move on and maybe we could be friends someday. I’ve asked him to block me again because I KNOW having access to him makes moving on harder for me, but he refuses and just tells me to block him instead.
I’m not trying to convince myself he secretly wants me back. He’s made it clear his romantic feelings are gone. I’m just extremely hurt because I feel like I was led on for months.

He pursued me again, kissed me, said he loved me, explicitly told me he’d never stopped liking me, continued flirting/telling me he missed me, and repeatedly said his schedule was why we couldn’t be together. Now his schedule finally is better and someone else gets the relationship I thought he was telling me he couldn’t give anyone at the time.
There’s also a part of me that knows I probably shouldn’t even want him back. His last actual relationship ended after he cheated on his girlfriend, and there was lying involved when she found out.
That was years ago and I believed he had changed, but obviously it’s something I’ve thought about too.
I also think this is hitting me so hard because I really don’t date around. Besides him, I’ve only ever gone on dates with one other guy. I don’t hook up with people, I’ve never had sex, and it’s genuinely really hard for me to find someone I connect with romantically. When I do connect with someone, it means a LOT to me. So I think losing him feels so much more heavy.

I feel stupid for holding onto hope, but I also feel like his own words and actions gave me that hope. I don’t know how I was supposed to hear “I never stopped liking you,” have him come back and kiss me/tell me he loved me, and somehow understand that I should completely let him go.

Am I being unfair? Crazy even? I just don’t know how to heal my heart has been so heavy for months.
