Considering a move
We are a young family considering a move from Georgia for work- please help me figure out if we could be happy there. I really don’t mean for this to be a negative post I genuinely would be so happy to be told that i am missing something and we could be happy there. people seem chill, laid back and liberal which is all really important to our family. we want our kids to grow among peers who are kind, open minded, thoughtful, and community oriented rather than very individualistic and superficial- it feels like this is so rare. I also prefer the heat so that’s a non issue to me.
From the limited time I’ve spent there my concerns include:
- major: looks like not a lot for kids to do such as very limited and underfunded (?) playgrounds or fun indoor activities for teens to do. What do the you get kids do here for play dates? Where do teens hang out with their friends?
- Good Mexican food but not much else? This may be controversial: I love food and trying new restaurants but don’t love Mexican food. Like I like it fine but I can’t get excited about it over and over. Are other ethnicities represented in the cuisine? If so where and are they very good? Similarly are other cultures represented in the city anywhere/any time of year?
- we are also not very outdoorsy so while I appreciate the natural beauty of the area, exploring the spaces doesn’t naturally appeal to me. I just didn’t grow up somewhere where going on hikes was a thing.
- Expensive housing with long commutes to the university to be the better school districts. Is this accurate or am I missing something?
- this isn’t a concern necessarily but if anyone had unique insight into the k-12 teacher culture that would be helpful. I would weigh heavily a school districts/area where the teaching culture is particularly nurturing and supportive of character development rather than just test score/outcomes focused. I think this is a hard ask but figured I’d add this in :)
Thanks for any local insights! Please don’t be offended I genuinely want to figure out if/how we could be good transplants to the area or if we should pass on this opportunity.
