Why can I remember the layout of a house I haven't been in for 15 years, but forget where I put something 10 minutes ago?

I can walk into an old friend's house in my head and remember where the stairs, sofa and kitchen were, but I’ll put my keys down and have absolutely no idea where they are five minutes later.

Why does our memory seem to work so much better for some completely random things?
