Like many of you, I was shocked to see that my experience seeing 70% three point shooters was not reflected in the data. I wanted to reject it outright but after looking more closely I believe more clarification is needed.
I think we're all assuming this is the % of shots from 3 that are going in, when in reality this could be the average shooters 3pt %.
This might seem like it doesnt matter on the surface, but in reality this can easily explain a radical shift.
If the calculation is done that way, then someone on an inside big who took one three pt in the entire season and missed it, would have a 0% three. In a data set of 2, with the other being an 80% three ball shooter who took thousands of shots from 3, the shooting % between them is either close to 79.9% when youre looking at shots, or 40% when looking at just their averages.
We need both data sets to accurately gauge shooting, and im hoping their aware of their methodology when presenting the numbers.
