The Half-Blood Prince's Copy of Advanced Potion Making

Are others also having a hard time with the fact that Snape's (The Half-Blood Prince's) heavily annotated copy of Advanced Potion Making by Libatius Borage would have been in such a terrible condition? They mention that it is "having its spine held together with thick black tape and pages yellowed and spotted with age". I always pictured snape to be a perfectionist and very precise in his doing, so I figured he would have taken better care of his book. Also, why did he leave his book there?
