How come I can see the sunset with my naked eyes, but I can't do it during a solar eclipse that is happening during sunset ?

I understand that looking at a solar eclipse could damage the retina. However, if the solar eclipse is happening right at the sunset time, then how is it possible that it can cause damage? I've watched and filmed hundreds of sunsets and yet my eyes/camera are both just fine.

What am I missing here? Perhaps the moon covering the sun would trick my pupils to dilate and get damaged by the sun?
