What's a destination that completely exceeded your expectations compared to its reputation?

Would love some insight from solo travelers who went somewhere with fairly low expectations (based on what you'd heard/read beforehand) and ended up being surprised in a positive way- whether that was safety, ease of meeting people, just the overall experience?
