Sixth biometric gun safe recall since 2023 — 9,100 BBRKIN/MouTec safes (model QHXP029B) recalled July 2026

Posting this because small recalls get missed and this one is only 9,100 units, which means most owners will never hear about it.
On July 9, 2026 the CPSC recalled BBRKIN and MouTec biometric gun safes, model QHXP029B, sold exclusively on Amazon from March 2020 through February 2024 for $260–$409. Failure mode: the biometric lock can be opened by unauthorized users whose prints were never registered. CPSC calls it a serious injury hazard and risk of death. No injuries reported on this one.
How to check: brand name on the upper right of the front, model QHXP029B, serial label on the lower right corner of the front, range SQC200034980–SQC202319171. Tall gray steel cabinet, roughly 14x12x57 inches, one shelf, holds about five guns.
Remedy per CPSC: stop using the biometric feature, remove the batteries, use the key only, and contact BBRKIN for a free repair kit.
What makes this worth a post is the pattern, not the recall:

Oct 2023 — ~61,000 Fortress safes, after the death of a 12-year-old, 39 reports of faulty locking
Feb 2024 — 120,000+ across Awesafe, Bulldog, Machir, MouTec, 91 reports including a 6-year-old who opened one
Jun 2024 — ~133,000 Sports Afield / Sanctuary, 77 reports
Aug 2024 — CPSC warning on 7,600 Owsoo / Cacagoo
Feb 2025 — CPSC flagged 183,000 Stack-On safes and said Stack-On refused to conduct an acceptable recall, leaving owners to disable the pads themselves
Jul 2026 — this one

Note that MouTec-branded safes appear in both the Feb 2024 action and this one.
I teach firearms in South Florida, so the practical version of my opinion: treat the fingerprint reader as a convenience feature that makes a safe faster to open when it works, and treat the mechanical key or keypad as the actual security. Also worth remembering the opposite failure — these readers refuse legitimate fingerprints too, and dry hands, cuts, sweat and sunscreen all make that worse.
If you own a quick-access container of any kind, go open it thirty times in the dark with your eyes closed. If it fails once, it's a decoration.
