Have you ever wondered how traders decide when to exit a leveraged ETF position?

One useful risk-management tool is the **Chandelier Exit**.

It appears on a regular price chart and uses market volatility to create trailing exit levels.

Market volatility is measured by the **Average True Range**, or ATR and is a technical indicator that measures an investment’s average price volatility over a selected period.

On this QQQ chart, both the **orange line at approximately 704.18** and the **blue line at approximately 685.50** are Chandelier Exit lines.

Based on their positions:

* The orange line is likely the **Short Exit**, or upper Chandelier line.
* The blue line is likely the **Long Exit**, or lower Chandelier line.

The actual QQQ price is shown by the candlesticks and the red dotted horizontal line, which is near **721.09** in this example.

Here is one way to interpret the lines.

If the price remains **above the lower blue Long Exit line**, the long trend remains supported.

If the price closes **below the blue Long Exit line**, that may signal that the long position should be reduced or exited, because the uptrend may be weakening.

The upper orange line can be used to manage a short position.

If the price is **below the orange Short Exit line**, the short-side condition may remain active.

If the price closes **above the orange line**, that may signal exiting a short position or possibly a bullish reversal.

The important point is that the orange and blue lines are not the price itself. They are indicator levels. The price is represented by the candlesticks and the current-price line.

In this example, QQQ is trading around **721.54**, which is above both the lower blue line at **685.50** and the orange line at **704.18**. That generally suggests that price is currently above the displayed exit levels, although it is not, by itself, a complete buy or sell signal.

Leveraged ETFs require special care because they magnify daily gains and losses and can be especially sensitive to volatility. The Chandelier Exit may help traders stay with a strong trend while providing a systematic way to manage risk.

Finally, line colors can be changed in chart settings, so always verify which line is labeled **Long Exit** and which is labeled **Short Exit** before relying on the indicator.

The key takeaway is simple: compare the closing price with the appropriate Chandelier Exit line, rather than judging the trade only by the colors or by whether the two lines are close together.
