Couch fabrics that resist cat nail ‘pinpricks’?

Cats have destroyed 3 cheap vinyl couches, not by ‘scratching’ per se, but just by digging their claws in when jumping on or off or just by kneading it. The cheap vinyl punctures every single time.

When it comes time to replace, does anyone have any suggestions for a fabric choice that will resist these punctures more?
