To be honest, buses are fucking awful.

They smell, they are cramped, they are expensive, and they seem to always "forget" to stop at the stop you're needing.

But, like some many young people starting out in their working lives, the bus is also your only option. A car is too expensive, the train is out of the question, and a request to your parents for a lift inevitably leads to a thirty-minute lecture on "back in my day..." and "stand on your own two feet". Which is why, without fail, you find yourself waiting at the bus stop every morning before the sun is up, arms folded in defiance at having to stoop to using public transport.

It's a motley crew who get on over the next hour as the bus winds it's way to work, slowly filling up the seats that are so filthy that even the bright colours and zigzag patterns struggle to mask. There's older couples heading into the city to enjoy a day out. There's the teenagers on their way to school or college, always blasting music and talking far too loudly for that time of day. There's other workers - easily identifiable by the zombie-like stares on their faces - travelling to work. There's the ones that argue with the drivers. The ones who stand in the middle of the aisle and block everyone else. There's the ones who haven't bothered to shower that morning. There's the ones who you'd avoid, even if they were next to the last seat.

All in all, it's fucking awful. And the trip back home is so much worse.

It's dark, it's crowded, it's often windy and raining. You're squeezed into a corner of the bus, often trapped between others, your hand gripping onto one of the metal poles to stop yourself from going flying when the driver slams on the brakes. Bags bump against you, people push and shove to make sure they get on, those lucky enough to get a seat seem to grin at those forced to stand. It takes almost an hour for the bus to reach your stop, the interior slowly draining as people get off. Often, you're one of the final ones remaining as you stumble off and begin to walk home in the darkness of the evening.
