Why is it omicron and not omicro?

I'm having a really hard time finding this answer. But I learned some stuff about omicron meaning "small o" in Greek, and a person I told was confused why it's omicron and not omicro. She was saying that since you have omega, and mega means big, why wouldn't it be omicro, micro being small?
