Found a stray cat in my neighborhood but I think I lost its trust.
Last night I found a stray while driving home. I had stepped out since it was right by my house and immediately noticed how friendly the cat was. I’ve been able to pet them and even fed them. Today, after reaching out to shelters, I was going to try to put them into a carrier so I can get the cat treated/vaccinated as I’m hoping to adopt. I first just tried to lure the cat in with food and, something I regret, got impatient and picked it up, trying to put the cat inside. After a bit of struggle I let the cat go and it retreated into this drain tunnel thingy. I’m going to try again tomorrow but I’m scared I lost the cat’s trust as prior to fleeing into the tunnel they were more than happy to rub up against me. How do I get the cat into the carrier and maintain its trust?
I’d also like to add that the cat hasn’t bit or scratched me and seemed fine with being picked up, I think being forced into the carrier was the issue.
