I need an advice from women of Ireland

I’m in the early stages of dating an Irish guy whom I met in my country, and I really like him. Things have been going well so far. I however noticed in some of his photos especially ones taken while he’s at work in Ireland, that he wears a ring on the ring finger of his left hand. To me, it looks EXTREMELY similar to a wedding ring, and I’ve always associated wearing a ring on that finger with marriage.

I asked him about it and he told me that he isn’t married and that it’s just a family ring. What I find a little strange is that he doesn’t wear it when he’s here, but he apparently always wears it when he’s in Ireland? Is wearing a ring like this on the left ring finger a normal Irish/cultural thing or should I be concerned that there’s more to the story?
