Vaping in The Bee Sting by Paul Murray
I’m currently reading The Bee Sting which is set in Ireland, circa 2008. A small detail has just annoyed me - there is a reference to boys vaping outside a shop. There were virtually no vapes in Ireland at the time - disposable vapes only became popular from about 2021 onwards.
The scary thing is, when I googled the above, the Google AI overview initially backed the vaping situation. The reasoning was that in 2013/2014, there were electronic cigarettes and the AI pushed that this was totally plausible.
However, as someone who grew up at that time, I know that the only e-cigarettes available were plasticky “quit smoking” tools as opposed to vapes on the market now.
Have you ever had a similar situation with a book that snaps you out of the story? 🤔
