Someone with a traumatic past trying to live alone?

Support/Vent

27 yo M here. I don't want to get down into the details but there was a time a few years back where my entire life seemed to hang by the thread and I came back to a shared setup after staying solo for like 7 months. Prior to that, I have always had at least a few people who I know, around, at least in the same room or my next room (parents, friends, roommates etc).

The past few years, I had to work my way out of the rut I was in, and I am perfectly financially stable and have nothing to technically worry about. But then I'm in a toxic room at the moment and I have a few lingering variables that could be resolved by the end of this year and I am looking into taking a leap of faith and moving solo, but then thethought of the complete silence and being entirely responsible for myself is throwing me for a loop. I keep running through "what-if" scenarios (like medical emergencies or general isolation anxiety), even though I know millions of people do this every day. The mere thought of staying alone feels scary, but then my current arranged setup isn't helping either - people cross boundaries, make my shared space a living hell, and have zero remorse in maintaining a decorum. I pretty much convinced myself that I am bound to keep struggling and parking things mentally aside to have some things normalised, but then I want to take charge of my life all myself.

  • How did you handle the psychological adjustment during the first few weeks?
  • What practical routines or safety habits helped quiet the anxiety about living alone?
  • Would love to hear how you survived (and came to love) your first months on your own.
