Is marriage just a title?

My partner and I have been dating for about 8 years and the pressure from family and friends to get married is overwhelming. He says it’s just a title to him so why should we get married “officially”. What exactly does that mean? I don’t expect us to get married and have this humongous wedding, but a ring would be nice. Advice or just words of wisdom?
