I thought my kid just needed more reading practice, but now I'm not so sure
My kid can read, but I'm starting to realize that doesn't necessarily mean reading is going well. They can get through the words on the page, but if I ask what happened in the story or why a character did something, the answers are usually very vague. We've been doing more reading at home, but I honestly haven't seen much change. I ended up reading an article comparing different reading programs for kids, and one thing that stood out was the difference between kids who struggle with actually reading the words and kids who can read but struggle with comprehension. Now I'm wondering if I've been focusing on the wrong thing this whole time. I looked at Reading Eggs and Night Zookeeper, and also Brighterly because the 1:1 format seems like it might make more sense if the issue is comprehension rather than just needing more practice. Has anyone dealt with this with their kid? Did a reading program help, or did you eventually move to a tutor?
