My grandparents are mad at me because of their plumbing mistake. Now it might end our relationship.

I will try and keep this as short as possible.

My grandparents live most of the year in North Carolina and winter in Florida, where I live full time. I’m currently living with my parents because I am disabled and unable to live on my own because I need help. I have a serious girlfriend of 1 year who I love very much.

When my grandparents were leaving for North Carolina in the spring, they sat me down and offered to let myself and my girlfriend use their condo as a respite from my parents house whenever we wanted. There were no stipulations or ground rules placed on this- the only thing they asked of me is that I don’t use the community pool, so we never have. We have kept the condo tidy and cared for it like our own home.

Two weeks ago, I was at the condo and made dinner, ate and cleaned up- this took about an hour and a half. Eventually I went into the master bedroom and felt a squelch beneath my feet. The wood floor felt damp- I called for my girlfriend to turn off the main water supply then called my grandfather. I checked everything until I felt the side of the toilet (I am not a plumber and not so handy).

Before they left, my grandmother had installed a bidet herself on that toilet. It turns out that bidet was missing a gasket and the line had a significant crease in it that caused the bidet to spray water everywhere- the flooring in the bedroom is ruined. My grandfather has to fly home to do mitigation and replace flooring in the entire condo.

Now here’s where the relationship issue comes in: apparently my grandparents have been blaming me for this incident. They alluded to it when when they called my mother yesterday. They also told her that they think we have been spending “too much time” at the condo, which they have heard from a neighbor friend of there’s that we are there “all the time”- one, this is not true, and two, even if was, we were not told we couldn’t be? My mother defended me and told them that they did not communicate anything of the sort to me and they just went silent.

Here is where my issue lies- my grandparents have a long history of not communicating their true feelings, intentions, and desires to me, which sets me up to fail. And I’m over it. I’m just sort of done this time. I’m feeling like when my grandfather comes home I don’t even want to see him, let alone talk to him. It’s always on me to be the bigger person with them and I’m just not feeling it anymore.

Am I in the wrong?
