xAI has released Grok 4.6, its new frontier model focused on long-running agents, coding and complex knowledge-work tasks.

The most interesting result comes from independent benchmarking firm Artificial Analysis. Grok 4.6 scores 61 on its Intelligence Index, up five points from Grok 4.5 and tied with OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol. It remains slightly behind Claude Fable 5 and Claude Opus 5 at the very top of the ranking.

The price difference is substantial. Grok 4.6 costs $2 USD per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens for standard API usage. GPT-5.6 Sol is currently priced at $5 and $30 respectively. Artificial Analysis says Grok 4.6 sits on its cost-performance Pareto frontier and measured an average cost of about $0.84 per Intelligence Index task.

xAI is particularly emphasizing agentic work rather than simple chatbot responses. Grok 4.6 scored 1753 Elo on GDPVal-AA v2 and improved from 54% to 65.9% on DeepSWE 1.1 compared with Grok 4.5. xAI says the model was trained to stay on complex projects for longer, research unfamiliar topics, work across codebases and verify more of its own work.

For developers, Grok 4.6 has a 500,000-token context window, accepts text and images, supports web and X search, code execution and function calling, and offers low through xhigh reasoning levels. A faster API tier is also available at twice the standard price.

One limitation for regular Grok users: xAI's launch announcement currently lists Grok Build, Cursor, the API, OpenRouter, Vercel and Cloudflare. It does not announce Grok 4.6 as the new model on Grok.com, X or the consumer mobile apps yet.
