Does anyone else have this problem?
I recently started browsing this subreddit because I have wanted to post some excerpts of my stories and get feedback. I enjoy seeing all the “Critique my story excerpt” posts and reading from others who are also pursuing their passion of writing fantasy. But I’ve noticed that whenever I read these posts and the prose is a bit more upper brow, I think it’s pretentious and trying too hard. I was thinking about it and I realized I never think that for established authors or published novels. I don’t think Robert Jordan or Tolkien or G.R.R.M. have pretentious prose, but for some reason when it’s an unknown writer, I think that. I’ve had to catch myself and analyze where that feeling is coming from. I’ve been wondering if maybe it comes from an insecurity of mine and feeling maybe threatened by the fact that my peers maybe have a better grip on prose than I do. I am my own worst critic, so I obviously judge my work harder than anyone else’s, but sometimes I feel too critical, especially as someone who doesn’t have any published work, looking at others and judging their prose. It’s just kind of been a moment where I’ve had to slow down and rethink my judgements. I haven’t commented anything on anyone’s post because I’m not someone who typically thinks I know better than anyone else enough to say it to their face, but I do often have these thoughts. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and had to analyze their own judgements that maybe have come from insecurity?
