2024 Mazda3 rear brake pad change — EPB piston extended too far, need advice

I'm doing the rear brake pads on my 2024 Mazda3 and unfortunately managed to do things in the wrong order. While trying to put the EPB into maintenance mode, I accidentally caused the rear caliper piston to extend too far.

The car is now showing "Parking Brake Malfunction" and at one point wouldn't completely shut down. I have since disconnected the negative battery terminal to prevent the EPB from continuing to operate.

The caliper is still intact and the piston is still in the bore, but it's extended far enough that I can't get my piston compressor tool properly positioned.

What's the correct way to manually retract the piston/EPB actuator in this situation? Is there a way to mechanically release the EPB actuator, or a specific procedure/tool I should use to retract the piston without damaging the caliper?

Any advice from someone who's dealt with this on a Gen 4 Mazda3 would be greatly appreciated. I know I screwed up the procedure — just looking for the safest way to recover from it.
