Movie of the day...Troll 2 (2025).
Taking place after the events in Troll, where a kaiju-sized troll menaced Norway, the sequel has another kaiju-sized troll menacing Norway.
So, yes, it’s basically a Godzilla movie, but with a lot more snow and a healthy dose of Norwegian folklore.
It’s fun. Much of the cast from the original movie (including Ine Marie Wilmann as Nora Tidemann and Mads Sjøgård Pettersen as Major Kristoffer "Kris" Holm) return for the sequel. The plot doesn’t require the characters to make too many stupid mistakes and even sacrifices a few well-liked characters for the sake of giving the story more emotional impact.
The performances are all good. The cinematography shows off how jaw-droppingly beautiful Norway can be. The special effects are well done and there is plenty of good giant troll action (including scenes where people get eaten).
The movie also has a lot of humorous moments, much of it thanks to nerdy Andreas Isaksen (Kim S. Falck-Jørgensen) and his pregnant wife Sigrid (Karoline Viktoria Sletteng Garvang).
The story gets a bit silly in places, but for the most part, it’s an enjoyable modern fantasy adventure. I recommend watching it in the original Norwegian with subtitles, and maybe with a glass of aquavit, too.
