The first time I saw the Pilot Custom Urushi in vermillion, it was love at first sight. Unfortunately, that pen, even used is not in my budget (yet). So I stumbled across the Big Red pen, you’ve probably seen elsewhere. I’ve heard that it’s a beefy oversized pen, and that was fine by me. I have big hands, so I wanted something that would be easy to grip without causing hand cramps - something I am prone to getting as I work on my penmanship. Anyway, the pen’s overall quality feels great. The only grip is that the included ink cartridges do not fit. Not really a factor, because in my research prior to purchase I had read that it includes a #6 Jinhao nib, that’s fairly small for the pen size. So I ordered the Jinhao Tiandao 1935 pen for an extra few bucks and swapped the nib assembly (which has a bigger nib and larger ink capacity). I’ve heard others say it’s a friction fit, and that is true, although in my case it was pretty friction. So, I added a couple layers of open thread tape to the grip section and it caught the threads of the barrel and snugged up nicely. I am a US Marine Corps veteran, so this pens colors struck me immediately as USMC colors. As an added bonus, the replacement nib has a crossed swords design which completes the vibe imo. The pen writing smoothly, and the nib feels nice, with no skips or hard starts.

Looking forward to writing with this one.
