Appeal to futility
You can tell yourself you're not harming animals directly, but we all are just by being part of this... and not like a little bit, but enough to cause a mass extinction in less than 100 years (>60% of the earths natural biomass has vanished since the 70's).
Anyone who flies, drives, or even takes transit, is part of the greater machine that is destroying the planet.
I Googled "the appeal to futility fallacy
"An appeal to futility is an informal logical error where someone claims that because a goal cannot be achieved completely or perfectly, any partial effort or action toward it is totally worthless. It is closely related to the Nirvana Fallacy and the perfect solution fallacy. [1, 2, 3]
Core Structure
The Goal: A desired, ideal outcome (X) is identified.
The Claim: A complete or flawless solution (Y) to reach absolute perfection is impossible.
The Fallacy: Therefore, taking any incremental steps or actions (Z) to improve the situation is pointless and should not be done. [1, 2]
Classic Examples
"We cannot eliminate all carbon emissions worldwide overnight, so there is no point in recycling or using fuel-efficient cars."
"You cannot achieve a completely crime-free society, so we shouldn't bother funding local police or community programs."
"Total world peace is impossible, so nations shouldn't bother signing peace treaties." [1]
Why It Is a Mistake
False Dichotomy: It treats the situation as a binary choice between absolute perfection and total inaction.
Ignores Partial Success: It ignores the genuine value of incremental progress, risk mitigation, or smaller positive outcomes."
