My ex-wife used to get angry and fight with me when I refused to eat the pasta dinners she would make weekly. What finally led me here.
We were married 10 years. At age 28 we were out drinking heavily during st Patrick's day, the next morning I felt like death and was constipated for 12 days straight. After about 4 months of getting weird reactions to alcohol I went to the doctor. The doctors sent me all over the city for test after test, blood tests, MRIs and finally a colonoscopy, all in all I spent around $4k on tests and Drs appointments only to be diagnosed IBS leaky gut syndrome.
I gave up at that point, I didn't trust doctors anymore so I stopped going to appointments and said screw an IBS diet I'll eat whatever I want!!
Drinking became impossible, as soon as the beer hit my stomach it was cramps, pain and eventually my throat started reacting with swelling. Ok no alcohol no big deal that's healthy anyway right? So I stopped drinking. Then it progressed into feeling like shit after eating pizza, sub sandwiches or pasta. Pasta especially made my stomach feel like I ate rocks and the constipation was awful.
My family and friends and even my wife were all unsupportive during all these health issues. If you don't have a tumor growing out of the side of your head people think nothing is wrong with you and think you are faking it to avoid social obligation. I'd say " I don't feel well I can't go meet for dinner sorry" and they'd get mad at me!
I burned my bridges and just stopped being social. I refused to go out to occasions where everyone around drank. I started eating only foods that agreed with me, beef jerky or protein shakes for breakfast, tuna and crackers for lunch and then whatever my wife would make me suffer through for dinner. Pasta dishes were made every week, her favorite dish and every week it was my night of pain.
Over time I became weak, I couldn't do sports activities anymore. My neck cramped up really bad one night and I ended up with a year of extreme neck pain, swelling and headaches. I couldn't sleep in my normal position anymore and had to find ways that didn't bother my screwed up neck. I'd wake up dizzy like vertigo feeling and call in to work to rest or just go in and work disoriented all day and hoped it went away. She me days I was fine other days I was driving zzy again and thought it was all because of the neck cramping and neck swelling. I hated Drs so I asked AI this diagnose me. AI told me I had a cervical disc rupture. I spent months treating my own neck issues with massage, otc pain killers and vitamins. Magnesium seemed to help. I eventually just figured I had a permanent injury that would eventually need surgery. Great I thought another health burden just what I needed.
My wife and I divorced about a month ago. I've been eating on my own ever since. 3 weeks ago I was living it up and eating subway or panda Express or large pizzas weekly and after each Friday splurge on fast food my insides felt more and more like they were rotting away. My stool was pure black, my dizziness was constant and hindering my ability to interact with people at work. I almost passed out just walking to the door one morning and called in sick instead.
I had enough! I was determined to figure out something that would help so I hammered AI with ALL of my symptoms, I told it what I at least and how it made me feel after. I told the AI my history in detail and BAM celiac diagnosis! Finally something to work on. I bought all gluten free from the store. And for a week I felt great! My neck cramp GONE, bowel issues became regular and normal each morning again. My stomach didn't hurt all night so I was finally able to sleep for more than two hours. And the best part the dizziness completely went away! I accidentally glutened myself over the weekend with some damn oat granola bars and set my progress back but that little mistake 100% confirmed the gluten was the cause.
I've been diligently eating gluten free now for 2 and a half weeks and my body is recovering finally.
TLDR: I posted this to talk about how shitty and unsupportive people can be about this illness. If people don't believe you screw em! Get help or fight for your own health! And secondly I just wanted people to be aware that bizarre symptoms that seem completely unrelated could be 100% related.
